About Us

Supporting Independence and Inclusion in Richmond

At Brighter Connections, we believe that every person deserves the chance to live a fulfilling, independent life within a caring and inclusive community.

Located in Richmond, Virginia, we are committed to providing mission-driven disability services that create real and lasting change for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and mental health challenges.

Our Story: Empowering Lives Together

Our journey began in 2017 with the opening of Carrie’s Care Home—a warm, supportive residential community where adults with ID/DD could find stability and a sense of belonging.

Motivated by a vision to extend opportunities for personal growth and connection, we launched Brighter Connections Day Support. This vibrant day program complements our residential services by offering skill-building activities such as budgeting, meal preparation, arts and crafts, and community outings that promote independence and enrich lives.

Together, Carrie’s Care Home and Brighter Connections exemplify our dedication to empowering individuals through community and compassionate care. With years of experience and a passionate team, we continue to create an environment where every person can thrive.

Brighter Connections Day Support: Engaging Activities for Independence

We foster independence through a variety of enriching activities:

  • Life Skills Development: Practical lessons in budgeting, meal planning, cooking, and creative projects.
  • Community Involvement: Outings and local visits that strengthen social ties and engagement.
  • Wellness Programs: Tailored exercise routines, nutrition guidance, and stress management techniques.
  • Individualized Support Plans: Customized plans developed with participants and their families to align with personal goals.

Our Impact

Stories of Growth and Independence

Since the start of Carrie’s Care Home in 2017 and the establishment of Brighter Connections Day Support, we have seen countless individuals flourish:

Before moving to Carrie’s Care Home, my daughter felt like she was stuck in one place. Now, she’s blossomed in ways I didn’t think possible. The team there goes above and beyond to make her feel supported and respected. I’ve seen her grow in confidence, learn new skills, and even make friends she loves spending time with. It’s given us peace of mind we hadn’t had in years.

My older brother, Matt, used to sit at home with nothing much to do. Then we found Brighter Connections, and it’s like he came alive. Now he’s got friends, activities, and even hobbies he never tried before. Watching him talk about his day with a huge grin is the best feeling in the world. Brighter Connections isn’t just a program; it’s a place where Matt gets to be his best self.

Never thought I’d enjoy going out and trying new things, but Brighter Connections changed that. They’ve got this way of making you feel brave, even when you’re nervous. Now, I’m learning how to budget, trying out recipes in their kitchen, and even going on trips with the group. I feel like I’m part of something bigger, and it’s awesome.

Jordan L., participant at Brighter Connections

I’ve been at Carrie’s Care Home for a few years now, and let me tell you, this place is the real deal. The staff don’t just check boxes—they actually care. They listen, they laugh with you, and they’re there when you need a hand. Plus, I get to help with community events, which makes me feel proud and useful. It’s not just a home; it’s my home.

Richard B., long-time resident at Carrie's Care Home

When I first heard about Brighter Connections, I wasn’t sure it would be much different from other programs. But boy, was I wrong! My son Alex comes home every day bubbling with excitement about what he did—cooking, playing games, even grocery shopping! It’s like he’s found a second family that truly gets him. It’s been life-changing, not just for him but for our whole family.

Karen D., mother of a Brighter Connections participant

Brighter Connections is great! I’ve learned how to plan meals and shop for groceries—things I didn’t think I could do on my own. The staff are really nice and always there to cheer me on. I feel more confident, and it’s fun being part of the community. I’m proud of what I’ve learned and can’t wait to keep doing more.

Daniel K., participant at Brighter Connections

Before we found Carrie’s Care Home, we were exhausted trying to keep up with my son’s needs. The minute he moved in, everything changed for the better. He’s thriving, making friends, and learning new things. Knowing he’s in a place that feels like home with people who care about him as much as we do? That’s priceless. We can finally breathe a bit easier and just enjoy being his family again.

The Carter Family

We were searching for a place where my daughter could really feel understood and supported, and Brighter Connections has been a dream come true. She’s picking up new skills, joining in on community outings, and, best of all, coming home with a huge smile on her face. I never thought I’d see her this confident and independent. It’s like a new chapter in her life, and I’m so grateful.

Sarah L., mother of a Brighter Connections participant

Living here at Carrie’s Care Home is like being part of a big, caring family. I used to spend most of my days alone, but now I’ve got friends and activities that keep me busy. The staff are always there to help but also let me do my own thing when I can. And when I started volunteering at the community center, it made me feel proud of myself. I feel like I belong here.

Michael T., resident at Carrie's Care Home

Brighter Connections has been amazing for Sam. Before he started going, he was so shy and withdrawn. Now, he’s making art, laughing, and even sharing stories about his day. The staff are so warm and really know how to bring out the best in everyone. Honestly, it’s a huge weight off my shoulders knowing he’s in such good hands. I finally see him happy, and that means everything to me.
